There are many diabetics that are able to control their condition by simply making dietary changes and combining that with taking adequate amount of exercises, though for the most part, most diabetics require taking diabetes drugs to control the levels of sugar in their bloods. No doubt, different types of diabetes drugs must be used to treat different instances of diabetes and their use is determined according to whether the pancreas are not producing sufficient amounts of insulin, or whether the body cells have become insulin resistant.

High Blood Sugar Levels

What is common to each different type of diabetes is the fact that the levels of sugar in the blood are higher than is recommended and thus there is need to control this level and one of the options open to diabetics is to use diabetes drugs. What’s more, if you have Type 2 diabetes, you may require taking oral medications which will help to increase the quantity of insulin in your body.

Normally, diabetes drugs do not make the user suffer from many side effects, though being synthetic in nature, such drugs can cause adverse reactions and whenever any side effects are noticed, they must be reported to a doctor without delay. Among the earliest of all diabetes drugs that were developed to treat diabetes was Sulfonylurea that could help increase the amount of insulin produced by the user, and this kind of diabetes drug was most used in the mid nineties because it did not cause any serious side effects either.

Another type of diabetes drugs are Biguanides that are class of drugs that are usually used on diabetics that are overweight, and a common brand of this type of drug is Metformin that helps the body to use its insulin in a more effective manner, though there are certain known side effects to using this drug including nausea and diarrhea, though not in every instance of its use.

In the recent past, there have even been some diabetes drugs that are a combination of Biguanides and Sulfonylurea, which is a change because earlier these two drugs were taken individually and only recently have they been combined together and examples of such combination drugs are Glyburide and also Metformin.

Yet another type of diabetes drugs is the one that helps the body deal with sugar after having taken a meal and such drugs are of the Meglitinide class of diabetes drugs. Normally, however, doctors will often start their patients with one or several diabetes drugs and then adjust the drugs and dosage so that the patient gets to maintain a proper level of blood glucose.
